The hard work kicks in!

Since returning after Christmas, 6 Turquoise have really started working hard. Not only during school time but also at home.

Here are some tips about what you can do outside school to help with your studies:

READ READ READ - at least 1/2 hour every day!

TIMES TABLE practice - get somebody in your family to test you

REVISE using the Science and Maths revision guides

NO LATE NIGHTS - get a good nights sleep

EXERCISE - at weekends get out to a park

EAT WELL - especially breakfast, it sets you up for the day

Miss Sayers and I (Mr Warren) look forward to seeing you at the parents evenings this week. And remember, if you have any concerns about your child or just want to know how they're getting on, please drop in before or after school any day.

A special welcome to our newest class member, Aya, who has joined us from Paddington Green. She has settled in well.

Gateway wins football tournament!

What a busy week!

The big news of the week is that our girls Y5 and Y6 football team won the Westminster Football Tournament on Thursday. Congratulations to them.

In Literacy we have been looking at non-chronological reports and at the end of next week we will be placing a selection of them in a time capsule that will be kept shut for many years!

In Maths we've looked at angles and learnt how to measure and draw them. The class competition this week is to estimate the size of the pink angle below. Put your entry on a piece of paper with your name on and put it in the class competition box. Winners will be drawn next week.

In Science we revised forces and inparticular UPTHRUST. Ask your children where you would find this force and which direction it pushes? Why do some of the balls float?

Literacy

This week the class has worked really hard at writing a newspaper article about the 3 Little Pigs. Ask your child how our story of the pigs was different to the usual story.

Sarah did some particularly good writing this week, house point to her. Well done!

Science

We looked at forces this week. Try this quiz and bring your answers in on Monday. Correct answers will be put into a box and the winner drawn out to win a house point:

1. What force pulls us to the centre of the Earth?

2. When might air resistance be a useful thing?

3. Describe what 'upthrust' is and give me an example of when it is happening.

4. Who discovered the force of gravity?

5. How do you show which force is stronger on a diagram?

Numeracy

This week we studied how to rotate a shape. Draw some shapes and rotate them through 90 degrees and bring them on Monday.

6 Turquoise learn about Air Resistance

Today in Science we studied the force of Air Resistance. We discussed how we could show the force on various objects.

Parents - ask your children to explain how gravity and air resistance act on this object.

House points go to Zubair and Hamed for working hard and showing good scientific understanding. Well done.

Y6 train at Lords, the home of cricket

Today, some of Year 6 continued their cricket training at Lords cricket ground.

Adrian, the trainer, worked on their batting skills and said,"Your batting and bowling have improved but we need to work on your catching!" Well done to everybody for working hard at this.

At the same, the rest of Year 6 were working on their football skills over on the pitches.

In Literacy, we looked at subject sentences. Parents - ask your children what the function of these special sentences are.

Are all metals magnetic?

Today in Science we discussed the force of magnetism. Parents - ask your children to explain what happens when 2 north poles of a magnet are near each other.

Well done to the children that got top marks in their spellings, footballs to all of you. A special mention to Muntaha who said, "I've cracked how to learn my spellings Mr Warren!" She got 20/20 for the first time.

Today in Art we studied the Mexican painter Frida Kahlo. Parents - ask your children about her and what was special about her paintings.

Today's 'football' goes to Naheed for trying really hard in all lessons today, especially Maths.Well done.

In History, we explored the Blitz during World War 2. Parents - ask your children what the Blitz was and why it was called the Blitz.

Congratulations!

Emdad, Malica, Megan, Ali A were the winners of the Science leaflet competition. The standard was incredibly high and the teachers had a difficult job choosing the winners.
